It is home to the rare and endangered Scarlet Macaw as well as over 330 migratory and native bird species. In addition, for those who love to walk, this area offers a spectacular shoreline with several beautiful secluded beaches and reefs to explore. One of these, Playa Blanca, a quiet, pristine, white sand beach, has been denominated a national Marine Wetland area to protect migratory bird species in the lowlands of the river estuary and beach of Playa Blanca.
The Punta Leona Private Club located within the reserve offers hikes in primary forest, birdwatching, restaurants, bars, swimming pools, a convenient store and other amenities.
