Summary: Very friendly to us as foreigners. Host comminicated well in English. Beautifully kept property. We found our first experience with futon beds very comfortable and the full bath in our room (paid extra for because I have tattoos and didnt wish to insult anyone in the main bath) was very comfortable. In summer, it is very warm in the main building, but individual rooms have aircon, which was a great relief in the "totemo atsuii" weather.
Would very much stay again and try the breakfasts next time. Please visit here, but with reasonable expectations that this is a traditional japanese experience.

Summary: Very good service from start to finish. We had the traditional dinner (served in your room) and it is extravagant and very good food.

Summary: We had a wonderful stay at Sumiyoshiya. The property itself is older but very well taken care of and our room was clean and comfortable. The owners were extremely friendly and the entire stay (check-in, check-out, etc) was very pleasant. But the best part was the kaiseki dinner that was available as an additional option (approx. $50-60/person). It was a seafood feast featuring all the fresh daily catch from the fish market next door. It was so delicious and amazing that I'd stay here again just for the dinner! The location was great; an easy walk from the main station, right next to the famous Omicho Market and a short walk to the Kenrokuen Garden. I highly recommend Sumiyoshiya for the hospitality and the amazing dinner!

Summary: It was our first experience of traditional Ryokan and we found the owner extremely helpful, great location and great experience. Very comfortable and family oriented business rather than large hotel calling itself Ryokan.
