Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: The room was clean, quality linens, had a nice little balcony. The in suite bathroom was clean and pretty. Silvia gave me some coffee and conversation in the morning. Conchita the dog is a yapper first alert device but harmless in reality and sweet. This place swings well above its weight for the price. Amazing location. I found the room and bedding to be clean and comfortable. The hanging hammock chair in my room was actually fully functional and I used it for some zen zoning after my arrival shower. The shower has a luxurious "rain" shower head. No hot water but you are in a very hot location and you don't need it. No AC (a feature not a bug!) but the room is not a sweltering "hot box" — if you are hot take a cool shower and rest. The windows and balcony door are nicely screened to keep out flying insects and other critters. The view of the lush yard and garden outside the room and over the balcony is great. The facility was quiet while I was there, good sleeping. The excellent beach is extremely close - a very easy walk of 3-4 minutes max. Ocean sunsets and open air sea turtle eco program. Overall it's low-key slightly quirky, but in good way. The vibe is in the key of "pura vida", minor diminished, which is cool — just take a deep breath and let it go. If you go in expecting to "rough it" for the price point, you will be extremely pleasantly pleased. Next time I come I want to try more hammock time on the upper deck — which is a nice communal space with very nice view. Note to booking.com, the close beach (extremely close) is Playa Playa Junquillal, not Playa Negra. The (local aquifer) water is drinkable from the tap — no issues for your stomach and tastes good.

Negative: Think of it more like a "posada" than a hotel — it's really a quite informal little place run by a family. Forget about the breakfast offering, unless you definitely confirm before you get there. Silvia should buy an electric kettle (they are cheap!) and let people share it in the common area — throw in some tea bags or let people bring their own. Currently wifi is weak in the rooms and on the upstairs terrace — that could easily be fixed in the future by someone who knows wifi wiring etc. There is good wifi in the lower level inside sitting area — though this area is shared by guests and the owner as well — so it's not 100% feeling "yours" or anonymous like the lounge of a big hotel. The wifi is a small issue at this bargain price. Get off your electronic screens anyway.
